    Why is it every time I read anything about the LHC I’m gripped by both fascination and a sense of utter dread…..

    You and me both. I think we’ve been conditioned by childhood TV showings of fifties SF movies where white-coated boffins dabble with things beyond their ken…

    I think it’s that whole ‘Cool, they’re trying to recreate the big bang/ Oh MY God! They’re trying to recreate the BIG BANG!!’ that makes me quirk an eyebrow.
    On the upside though, I’ve not (yet) seen any scientists working on it with improbable surnames…….

    MattC: Ok, thats A) incredibly awesome and B) distinctly disconcerting.
    Really doesn’t help that the the LHC resembles something old Vic Von Doom would build…..

    I agree with you all. The damn thing fills me with a feeling of ugh. And the fact that it broke down in the first place must mean something somewhere doesn’t like it. OOer!
